General
Information
Nepal is one
of the richest countries in the world in terms
of bio-diversity due to its unique geographical
position and altitudinal variation. The elevation of the country
ranges from 60 m above sea level to the highest
point on earth, Mt. Everest at 8,850 m, all
within a distance of 150 km resulting into
climatic conditions from Sub-tropical to Arctic.
It faces a number of
environmental challenges such as deforestation,
encroachment on animal habitats and vehicle
pollution in the capital, Kathmandu.
Most of the population depend
on agriculture - and over 40% are estimated to
live below the poverty line. Foreign aid remains
vital to sustaining the Nepalese economy, and
the country is also dependent on trade.
